The Route to Scafell Pike via Mickldore

Recently I wrote about doing a hike and scramble up Scafell Pike in the Lake District. What outdoor gear should be taken on a day walk up the highest mountain in England? This would obviously depend upon the time of year and the expected weather conditions. Below is a list of the outdoor gear that I took with me on my hike, indicating what gear I used and did not use.

The Walking Gear I Took Up Scafell Pike

The hike took place in mid June, not far off the longest day of the year. The weather forecast was for glorious, uninterrupted sunshine all week.

Sadly its been a while since I have been hiking in the Lake District. Last week my absence from the Lakes ended when some friends, who were staying near Lake Windermere on holiday, invited me to join them in an ascent of Scafell Pike. With the weather forecast to be sunny for most of the week there were sure to be excellent views from the summit to make the hard slog up worthwhile.

The Lakeland 100 (The Ultra Tour of the Lake District) is an epic 100 mile long distance trail race which takes place on the weekend of July 31st – August 2nd 2009. The event is set in the stunning scenery of the lake district and the 100 mile circular route is made up entirely by footpaths and public bridleways. Bear in mind though that just because the route is made up of paths and bridleways, it doesn’t mean that its always easy going as in the lakes bridleways can be very rugged, covered with rocks or have nearly disappeared into bog.

Headlines over the weekend have been highlighting what has been some of the worst storms to face ‘The Original Mountain marathon’, causing it to be called off for the first time in it’s 40 year history.

The Original Mountain Marathon, near Keswisk, Cumbria

Each year several hundred people take part in this mountain marathon, a fell run over very challenging terrain in the Lake District.

It involves teams of two, carrying all clothing, equipment, tent, sleeping bag, and their food for 36 hours, during the run. They must also navigate their own route and camp out overnight.

What is a Nunatak?

The obvious answer is that it is a situation in which you are accosted by lady who has dedicated her life to god.

In terms of mountaineering however,

Sharp Edge as a Nunatak - artists impression

A Nunatak is a mountain or rock that protrudes through an ice field.

Nunataks are usually identifiable landmarks or reference points in glaciers or ice caps.

Supposing we were to enter another ice age and glaciers flowed into the Lake DistrictSharp Edge could become a nunatak, as in the artists impression on the left!

One of my favourite walks was across Sharp Edge in the Lake District. Sharp Edge is a ridge scramble route up to the top of a mountain called Blencathra.

It must have sounded like a good idea at the time!

Being scared of heights I find that scrambling can be unpleasant and I am usually reluctant to take on such challenges. One Sunday morning in August 2003, I received a text message from my walking partner to say that he would be arriving at my house imminently and that we would be going to scramble across Sharp Edge! Apparently I had agreed to this after several pints the previous Friday evening and there was no way that I would be backing out of it. It must have sounded like a good idea at the time.
