Outdoor People and Social Media

What is Social Media?

Social media is the online version of the pub.  You know when you’ve been out walking in the Lakes and you duck in to the local pub at the end of your trail, covered in mud and looking forward to that first pint and a hearty roast dinner, sharing stories of how you were nearly blown off a cliff in a gale once, and how your new waterproof jacket from your new favourite outdoor shop is even better than what you hoped it would be…social media is just like that!

What is social media, really?!

Social media is really any sort of method of online social interaction in a public place.  It can take the form of blogs, forums or social-specific content sharing sites such as Delicious, Digg or Stumbleupon.

Why do people use Social Media and Bookmarking Sites?

People, including outdoor folk, use these sites to store and share their favourite content.  The idea is that they connect with like-minded people and then get recommended content from people with similar tastes, rather than just relying on the search engines.  It’s massively popular with a very high percentage of people so there will be plenty of new friends and content to discover!

Subscribe to RSS Feed

RSS stand for really simple syndication (of content), which to you and I means that you can ‘feed’ / ’stream’ that content to a RSS Feed aggregator such as iGoogle or Google Reader so that you are can see quickly when your favourite sites have added new content.

And you can subscribe to our RSS feed here – give it a go!

Other forms of bookmarking

If you don’t already have social media accounts, and you’re not interested in sharing your favourite content by signing-up and doing so, you can of course use your browser to remember things – although in most households this is not personally organised, it can still help.  Simply, press ‘Ctrl’ and ‘D’ and that should provide a pop-up screen for you to label the bookmark to be stored in your browser.

Any questions, always feel free to contact us as we’re more than happy to help!
